The switch is smart, but your wall probably isn’t ready

A smart light switch (智能開關) is the cheapest, highest-impact upgrade in a smart home, until you go to fit one and discover it won’t work in your wall. The reason is a wire that isn’t there. A smart switch has to stay powered around the clock, and that demands a neutral wire most Hong Kong switch boxes simply don’t have. It’s the single most fixable trap in the whole smart-home plan, but only if you catch it at the right moment, while the walls are open. Miss that window and the cheap fix becomes an expensive one, or an impossible one.

Why a smart switch needs a neutral wire

An ordinary switch is a dumb interrupter: it breaks the live wire and the lamp goes off, drawing nothing. A smart switch is always on, its radio and processor keep running even when the lamp is off, so it can listen for the app, the voice command or the schedule. To stay powered continuously it needs a neutral wire as a return path back to the consumer unit. Without one, it has no clean way to draw the trickle of power it needs to stay alive.

Why your switch box probably has none

Here’s the Hong Kong catch. Traditional lighting wiring feeds the ceiling fitting first and drops only a switched-live loop down to the wall switch. So a typical switch box holds:

  • Live
  • Switched-live (the wire back up to the lamp)
  • Earth

…and no neutral. The neutral is up at the ceiling rose, not at the switch, which is exactly where the smart switch needs it. This isn’t a fault; it’s how homes were wired before switches needed power of their own.

The 鬼火 problem with no-neutral switches

No-neutral smart switches do exist, and they get sold as the easy answer. They aren’t. To power themselves without a neutral, they trickle a small current through the lamp even when off, which produces three problems:

  • They impose a minimum lamp wattage, so efficient LEDs may not work at all.
  • On cheap LEDs the leakage causes flicker or a faint “ghost light” (鬼火), the lamp glows dimly when it should be dark.
  • Screen and keypad panels generally can’t run single-live at all, the fancier the switch, the more power it needs, and the less a no-neutral hack can supply.

A no-neutral switch is a workaround, not a fix.

The cheap fix: run a neutral at first-fix

The real solution is simple and cheap if the timing is right: have the electrician run a neutral wire into every lighting switch box during first-fix, while walls and ceilings are open. Do that and any switch, including full panels, works with no minimum-load compromise and no ghost light.

The timing is unforgiving. In one real flat, after the light positions were moved and the walls sealed, only two switch boxes in the entire home could still be re-fed with a neutral. Move a light after plastering and it can’t be done. This is why the smart-home decisions belong in the design, before demolition, not at the app store afterwards.

Wi-Fi, Zigbee/Thread or Matter?

Once the neutral is sorted, the backbone is the next choice:

  • Wi-Fi, joins the router directly, no hub; simple for a few devices, but loads the router at scale, and 2.4 GHz gets crowded in a dense block.
  • Zigbee / Thread, a low-power mesh needing a hub or coordinator; mains-powered devices relay for each other, so coverage strengthens as you add devices. The more reliable whole-flat backbone.
  • Matter, not a radio but a compatibility layer over Wi-Fi and Thread, letting devices cross-pair across Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa. Preferring Matter-capable gear reduces single-vendor lock-in.

A note on Hong Kong electrics

Hong Kong runs on 220 V / 50 Hz with BS 1363 (Type G) three-pin outlets. US or Japanese 110–120 V gear needs a regulator, and mainland two-pin plugs don’t physically fit, so buy switches and controllers rated for local supply. Management offices also often require a written renovation application before low-voltage cabling, and some require an approved electrician for switch and gateway installs.

為何你的掣盒很可能沒有中性線

香港的關鍵陷阱在此。傳統照明佈線先接天花燈具,只把一條開關火迴路拉下去到牆掣。因此典型的掣盒內只有:

  • 火線
  • 開關火(拉回天花燈具的電線)
  • 地線

……卻沒有中性線。中性線在天花的燈座(ceiling rose)位置,而非在牆掣,但牆掣正正是智能掣需要它的地方。這並非故障,而是在開關本身需要供電之前,住宅佈線一貫的做法。

免中性線開關的「鬼火」問題

免中性線的智能掣確實存在,並且被當作簡單的答案來賣。它們並非如此。為了在沒有中性線下自行供電,它們即使在關燈時也會讓微量電流「漏」經燈具,這帶來三個問題:

  • 它們會設下最低燈泡瓦數,令省電的 LED 可能完全不亮。
  • 在平價 LED 上,這股漏電會造成閃爍或微弱的「鬼火」,燈應該熄滅時卻隱隱發亮。
  • 屏幕及按鍵式面板一般根本無法只靠單火運作,開關愈花巧,需要的電力愈多,免中性線的臨時方法能供應的就愈少。

免中性線開關是權宜之計,並非真正的解決方法。

便宜的解決方法:趁底線階段拉中性線

真正的解決方法很簡單、也很便宜,前提是時機正確:在底線階段(first-fix),趁牆身和天花尚未封閉時,讓電工把中性線拉到每一個照明掣盒。做好這一步,任何開關,包括完整的面板,都能運作,沒有最低負載的妥協,也沒有鬼火。

時機毫不留情。在一個真實個案中,燈位移動、牆身封好之後,全屋只剩兩個掣盒仍能重新補上中性線。批盪之後才移動燈位,就無法再做。這正是為何智能家居的決定應該在設計階段、拆卸之前就定下來,而非事後才在應用程式商店裡處理。

Wi-Fi、Zigbee/Thread 還是 Matter?

中性線搞定後,下一個選擇是骨幹網絡:

  • Wi-Fi,直接連路由器、不需集線器;裝置少時很簡單,但數量一多便加重路由器負擔,而在密集的樓宇,2.4 GHz 頻段容易擠塞。
  • Zigbee/Thread,低功耗的 mesh 網絡,需要集線器或協調器;市電供電的裝置會互相中繼,因此裝置愈多、覆蓋反而愈。是全屋較可靠的骨幹。
  • Matter,並非無線制式,而是架在 Wi-Fi 和 Thread 之上的相容層,讓裝置能跨 Apple Home、Google Home、Alexa 配對。優先選支援 Matter 的產品,可減少單一品牌綁定。

關於香港電力的一點提醒

香港採用 220 V/50 Hz,配 BS 1363(Type G)三腳插座。美國或日本的 110–120 V 產品需要變壓器,而內地的兩腳插頭在物理上插不進去,所以要購買符合本地電力規格的開關和控制器。管理處亦往往要求在鋪設低壓線路前提交書面裝修申請,部分更要求由認可電工安裝開關及網關。
