Platform Beds (地台床) in Hong Kong: Space-Saver or Regret?

A platform bed (地台床) is a Hong Kong space-saver, until it moulds. The four types, the damp detailing that makes or breaks it, and the regrets to design out before you build.

The space-saver with one make-or-break detail

A platform bed (地台床) is a favourite Hong Kong space-saver, it turns the dead volume under a mattress into storage and can raise a whole zone into a sitting or study nook. But it has one detail that decides everything, and it isn’t the storage layout or the finish. It’s damp control under the mattress. Get that right and a platform bed earns its keep for years; get it wrong and body moisture breeds mould and dust mites on the underside within a single Hong Kong season. This guide covers the four types, the ventilation detailing that makes or breaks it, and the regrets to design out before you build.

The four types

TypeWhat it is
Drawer platform (抽屜地台床)Side drawers for daily access, the everyday workhorse
Gas-lift (油壓揭起式)The whole mattress base hinges up on gas struts to one deep cavity
Tatami platform (榻榻米地台)Lift-up floor panels over storage wells
Full-room platform (全屋地台)A raised floor across the room with several compartments, doubles as a sitting or study zone and can split a studio without a wall

The best designs mix them: everyday drawers for what you reach for daily, a lift-up section for bulk, and step-drawers where the platform changes height.

The make-or-break detail: damp control

This is the part that separates a platform bed that lasts from one you regret. In Hong Kong’s humidity, a sealed box traps the moisture your body gives off overnight and grows mould on the mattress underside fast. The fix is a set of moves, and you want all of them:

  • A slatted base (排骨架), not a solid board, under the mattress, so air moves and sweat dries. This is the single most effective move.
  • Discreet vents and breathing gaps built into the sides and base. Never seal the box airtight.
  • Moisture-resistant board specified for the carcass.
  • Removable or hinged access panels so you can air, inspect and clean the cavity, not a sealed void you can never open.

Then live with it correctly: run a dehumidifier through the wet season, periodically lift and air the mattress, and store nothing damp inside. Design the ventilation in and the platform is fine; leave it out and no amount of cleaning saves it.

Plan the storage access before the carpentry

How you get into the storage matters as much as how much it holds, and the mistakes here are permanent:

  • Side drawers only open on sides facing open floor. A drawer built to face a wall simply can’t open, so decide the open side before carpentry, against how the room is actually used.
  • Drawer depth is limited to the platform height, which suits daily items rather than bulk.
  • The gas-lift cavity is for suitcases and off-season bulk touched a few times a year. Because you must clear the surface and lift the mattress to reach it, it quietly becomes “forgotten” storage, fine for what you rarely need, wrong for anything you use weekly.

The rule of thumb: everyday items in drawers, seasonal bulk under the lift-up, and never rely on a lift-up cavity for something you touch often.

Get the ergonomics right

Set the platform height so it’s comfortable to sit on and rise from, too low and it’s a struggle, too high and it’s a step you resent. Add a step for a tall platform, and round the edges in a child’s room. These are small choices, but they decide whether the platform feels like architecture or an obstacle.

The regrets, and how to design them out

Naming the documented downsides is the fairest way to help you decide

  • Mould and dust mites on the mattress underside or in the cavity, the core risk, solved by the ventilation detailing above.
  • You can’t sweep or vacuum under a sealed platform, so internal dust builds, solved by access panels.
  • A raised floor steals ceiling height and feels oppressive in a low flat, keep it shallow, or reconsider.
  • Fixed joinery can’t move, you can’t take it from a rented flat.
  • A pipe leak beneath is hidden and awkward to inspect or repair, route and access matter.

When to pause on the idea

A platform bed isn’t right for every flat. Pause and reconsider if you’re in a low-ceiling flat (the raised floor steals the height you can least spare), a rented flat (fixed joinery you leave behind), or a very damp, ground-floor or poorly ventilated unit (the ventilation has to work much harder to stay ahead of mould). And where you need frequent access to heavy items, choose drawers over a lift-up base, clearing and lifting a mattress every time defeats the purpose.

How Primeworks handles this

We treat the damp detailing as the spec, not an afterthought: a slatted 排骨架 base, built-in vents that never seal the box airtight, moisture-resistant board, and access panels so the cavity can be aired and inspected for years. The open side of every drawer is decided against how you actually move before anything is cut, and we’re honest about when a platform is the wrong call, a low ceiling, a rented flat, a damp unit, rather than selling one anyway. A platform bed should give you storage, not a mould problem.

Primeworks

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the downsides of a platform bed? +
The core risk is damp. Body moisture gets trapped under the mattress and, in Hong Kong's humidity, breeds mould and dust mites on the underside within a season, the single biggest regret. You also can't sweep or vacuum under a sealed platform, so internal dust builds up; a raised floor steals ceiling height and can feel oppressive in a low flat; the joinery is fixed, so you can't take it from a rented flat; and a pipe leak beneath becomes hidden and awkward to inspect or repair. Every one of these is designable-out, but only if you plan for it before building.
How do you stop a platform bed from getting mouldy? +
Ventilate the base and keep it serviceable. Use a slatted base (排骨架) instead of a solid board so air moves under the mattress and sweat dries, the single most effective move. Build discreet vents or breathing gaps into the sides and base and never seal the box airtight; specify moisture-resistant board for the carcass; and include removable or hinged access panels so you can air, inspect and clean the cavity. Then run a dehumidifier through the wet season, lift and air the mattress periodically, and store nothing damp inside.
When should you not build a platform bed? +
Pause on a platform bed in a low-ceiling flat, since the raised floor steals height and can feel oppressive, keep it shallow or reconsider. Pause in a rented flat, because the fixed joinery can't come with you. Pause in a very damp, ground-floor or poorly ventilated unit, where the ventilation has to work much harder to avoid mould. And where you need frequent access to heavy items, side drawers beat a lift-up base, clearing and lifting a mattress every time turns deep storage into forgotten storage.
